Residents of Maruthapandi Nagar in Ward 76 (Palanganatham) complain that they have been living amid filth for the past six months. Ever since the Southern Railway began gauge conversion work on Madurai-Bodinaickanur line, civic authorities have stopped clearing garbage in the entire stretch.

P. Palani, one of the residents, says there is only a single bin for dumping garbage of about 3,000 households. He says they do not have the facility of door-to-door garbage collection. There is a lack of proper forum to get their grievances redressed.

P.M. Marimuthu, another resident, complains that they do not have proper water supply. β€œAll three storage tanks in our area have been removed and two borewells sunk by the Corporation do not yield water. Moreover, pipelines have been laid to connect only a third of the households,” he says.

Even those who get water complain that it stinks as they suspect leakage from the sewage pipes located close to the water supply line. The residents say they complained to corporation officials and even Ministers but no no avail.
