The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) on Monday nabbed a suspected drug dealer after hours of surveillance by its drug enforcement unit.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said officers were surveilling a man in the Springs area after receiving a tip-off "from a reliable source".

"The suspect's vehicle was subsequently stopped and searched on Tonk Meter Road near N17 Hospital whereupon various drugs were [discovered] in his vehicle."

Kgasago said that police found 25 packets of crystal methamphetamine, cat, heroin and rock – all of which totalled about R12 000.

"The 49-year-old [suspect] was detained at Springs police station where he was charged with possession and dealing in illicit substances."

He is expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court soon.
