On Mother’s Day, scores of Noida mommies headed to a mall in sector 34A with their families - not for mall-hopping, but for participating in a fitness
run. While some donned the usual tracksuits or shorts, a couple of them turned up in saris and were the cynosure of all eyes as they comfortably ran along with other participants.
‘The idea was to celebrate motherhood and break stereotypes’
Deepak and Kumud Mehra, organisers of the event, said, “There were different categories, including 1km, 2km, 4km and 6km runs. The idea was to celebrate motherhood and break stereotypes. So there was no restriction, people ran in whatever they were comfortable in. So, many of them broke the convention and ran in
sari teamed with sports shoes.”
Run like a diva!
‘I chose a lightweight chiffon sari for running’
Keerti Ahlawat, a resident of
Mayur Vihar and a mother of a three-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son, and the winner of the 2km sari run, told us, “I’m a
fitness enthusiast and have earlier participated in long-distance runs, but had never participated in a sari. I found the concept of sari run quite interesting, so I decided to give it a try and since the distance was just 2km, it wasn’t much of a hassle. I chose a lightweight chiffon sari and a pair of running shoes. Onlookers cheered the maximum during the sari run challenge. It was empowering to see hundreds of moms turn up for a fitness event. It was a well-spent Mother’s Day for me as my mom had also come to cheer for me.”
All smiles!
