Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is undergoing a kidney transplant operation at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The sixty-five-year-old was taken to the operation theatre at 8am Monday morning, sources told PTI. He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday. Jaitley had been on dialysis for the past one month.
Nephrologist Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo Hospital, who is the brother of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, is one of the doctors operating on Jaitley, sources told PTI, adding that the director is a family friend of Jaitley.
In a tweet on April 5, Jaitley said he was receiving treatment for kidney-related problems. He had also cancelled his scheduled visit to the UK for 10th India-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue due to be held next week. “I am being treated for kidney-related problems & certain infections that I have contracted,” he has said on Twitter.
Without giving more details, he had said he was “currently working from a controlled environment at home,” adding, “The future course of my treatment would be determined by the doctors treating me.”
Jaitley has undergone a bariatric surgery for weight gain due to long-standing diabetic conditions. The operation was first conducted at Max Hospital but he had been later transferred to AIIMS hospital due to complications. He had also undergone a heart surgery many years ago.
