‘Science and tech can transform society’

The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar organised a workshop titled ‘Recent Advances in Biotechnology for Food, Nutrition and Health Security, to mark the National Technology Day on Friday.

Over 200 collage and school teachers and research students participated in the workshop. They were informed about information and progress made in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities in agriculture, health and environment sectors, where science and technology innervations could play crucial role.

Dr SekharMande, Director, the National Centre for Cell Sciences, Pune, inaugurating the event called for inculcating scientific temper among the younger generation so that they could take up challenging problems and work towards providing scientific solutions to societal problems. Dr Ajay Parida, Director, ILS spoke on the tremendous opportunity in science and technology sector for younger generation and said that concerted efforts need to be taken to attract students in the area of science education, research and job and employment generation.

Among others, IBSD, Imphal Director Dr Dinbandhu Sahoo spoke on marine biotechnology, RMRC Director Dr SanghamitraPati spoke on health and nutrition and the ILS’s Dr Soma Chattopadhyay spoke on genetics and genomics and Prof S Das spoke on microbial biotechnology.

The workshop ended with an interactive session.
