Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit today appealed to doctors and nurses to join hands to make comprehensive healthcare affordable in the state.
"The mission before us is to make health care comprehensive, universal, affordable and qualitatively professional," he said while addressing a National Conference on Nurses here.
"For achieving this objective, the road ahead is going to be complex and arduous," he said adding that it requires combined efforts of doctors and nurses to achieve success.
Noting that Tamil Nadu has always been an important centre for medical diagnosis and treatment, Purohit said, the state enjoys an impressive record in the reduction of infant and maternal mortality rates.
Tamil Nadu ranks first in terms of the number of children getting immunised and takes pride in the lakhs of eminent medical practitioners and nursing professionals engaged in providing healthcare, he said.
Referring to an estimate by Confederation of Indian Industry, the governor said there has been 20 per cent growth on medical tourists visiting the State every year.
"The presence of robust infrastructure coupled with specialised medical care is one of the most important reasons for the heavy inflow," he said.
