Additional director general of police Himanshu Roy was known to be one of the fittest officers in the Mumbai police force. Such was his love for fitness that he worked out at his gym in Churchgate on Thursday, a day before he ended his life.

“This used to be his happy place where he found peace,” said his close friend from the Churchgate gymnasium, on condition of anonymity. “Even when he was the joint commissioner (crime), he never skipped the gym. With or without sleep, he was always here from 6am to 7am.”

Lean to muscular, Roy worked hard for the transformation. “In 1998, he started to visit a gym in Worli. He has been visiting the gym in Churchgate since 2002,” said the friend.

“He used to do a lot of cardio training. After a while, he started to focus on gaining weight and worked
very hard. He never missed a single training session.”

Over 6-ft tall, Roy was known as a super cop for his regime at the gymnasium. Recently, Roy was being assisted by a helper, but, “he always wanted to do things on his own,” said the friend. “He never came across a high-profile officer. He had many friends. He was a fighter… a guiding light to many of us.”
