Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Saturday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for visiting temples in Nepal when polling was underway in Karnataka, saying he was trying to influence voters.
"This is not a good tradition in democracy. In Gujarat, he did a roadshow after casting his vote. Election Commission has clearly said that no one can do a roadshow. Despite that he violated the model code of conduct," Gehlot told the media here.
"Today, he chose a new way (to influence voters). As the polling got underway in Karnataka, PM visits Nepal temples, because he can't do it in the state as the model code is in force ... just to influence voters," he said.
"Why did he only choose today (Saturday) as the day (to visit temples)," he asked.
The Congress leader said: "He is trying to sent out a message that he is very religious and a Hindu. In India, only RSS-BJP people, Modiji and Amit Shahji (BJP President) are Hindus, the rest of Hindus don't stay in India."
