Maharashtra top police officer Himanshu Roy commits suicide

Himanshu Roy, Maharashtra cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, allegedly committed suicide in his south Mumbai residence on Friday afternoon.

Senior Mumbai police officers confirmed that Mr. Roy (54), who was on sick leave, shot himself through his mouth with his service weapon at 1 p.m. in his flat in Suruchi Apartments near Mantralaya. He was taken to the Bombay Hospital with a bullet injury and doctors there declared him ''brought dead'' at 1.47 p.m.

Mr. Roy, who was last posted as Additional Director General of Police, Establishments, had been on sick leave since November 23, 2016 owing to a terminal disease. Sources said he had been abroad for treatment but later suffered a relapse, which caused him severe depression.

Was chief of anti-terrorism squad

An alumni of the St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai and an IPS officer of the 1988 batch, Mr. Roy had served in several important postings in Mumbai, including Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) and Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). He had also served as the chief of the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad.
