Brain-dead accident victim turns organ donor at Jipmer

A team of doctors at Jipmer hospital harvested organs from a brain dead accident victim and transplanted them to three patients with kidney and liver failure on Monday.

According to a Jipmer press note, on May, 36-year-old Murugan, a resident of Panrutti met with an accident near Rasiyapalayam, in Panrutti police station limits while riding his two-wheeler. He was given first aid at Panrutti Government Hospital. The patient who had sustained severe injury was referred to Jipmer for further treatment.

The patient’s family, on knowing he was brain dead, came forward to donate his organs as they felt it would improve the living conditions of other needy patients. His wife Vanitha, brother Krishnan and brother-in-law Prakash gave their consent for the organ donation.

The brain death certification was done by a team led by Dr. Sunil Narayan (Neurology) and Dr. P. Narayan (Pediatrics).

On account of medico-legal case, a police team led by Arokiyaraj, Inspector of Police conducted inquest at the hospital and completed other formalities, thus facilitating the process.

The procedure was performed by a group of multi-organ transplant specialists including Dr. Sandeep Mishra (HOD Anaesthesiology), Dr. Lenin Babu, Dr. Mohan, Dr. Sathyaprakash, Dr. Sakthi Rajan Paneerselvam (Anaesthesiology and Critical care), Dr. R. Manikandan and Dr. Seerag (Urology), Dr. Satish Haridasan (Nephrology) and Dr. Biju Pottakkat (Surgical Gastroenterology).

Another team of transplant coordinators led by the Nodal Officer, NOTTO, Jipmer, Dr. Sreejith Parameswaran, and including R. Prakash, S. Nirmala and V. Arjun took over the process from counselling the family for organ donation to harvesting organs.

Inspiring act

Dr. Vishnu Bhat, Director, Jipmer, appreciated the family and said Mr. Murugan’s organs saved the life of three needy patients. He added that the gesture of the family should serve as an inspiration for others.

Jipmer administration is planning to set up a multi-organ transplantation programme in the hospital, Dr. Bhat added.
