The Age is the fastest growing masthead in Australia, according to new figures.

Data released on Thursday by Roy Morgan Research found the publication is increasing its audience in online and print at a greater rate than its metropolitan rivals.

The publication's total cross-platform audience rose 10.9 per cent to more than 3.1 million people in March, up by 305,000 readers from the previous year.

Figures from the latest readership report for Australian newspapers found The Age's digital subscriptions had jumped from 2.3 million to 2.6 million in the last year.

Fairfax sister publication, The Sydney Morning Herald, was again the number one masthead in Australia, with a cross-platform audience of more than 4.2 million readers per week, up 0.6 per cent from the previous year.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph was ranked second and the Herald Sun fourth.

“I’d like to thank our readers for their support in making The Age the most read masthead in Victoria, according to these figures,” said Age editor Alex Lavelle.

“Our aim is to produce fair, balanced, responsible and constructive journalism that our readers trust and engage with.

"We want to continue to raise the bar and focus on the issues that matter to people in Melbourne and Victoria.”

The research obtained from a single source survey of 50,014 Australians aged 14 or over found that 16.1 million Australians, read or access newspapers every week in print, online or via an app, up 3.2 per cent from last year.

It also found 7.3 million Australians read print newspapers, including more than 5.2 million who read weekday issues, more than 4.4 million who read Saturday editions and nearly 4 million who read Sunday titles.
