Nintendo and Sony change warranties to be a little more repair-friendly

“75% of European digital ecosystem is present at #TNW2018”

Are you doing business in Amsterdam in May?

USGamer reported Nintendo’s change in language, which now states your warranty doesn’t apply if you use third-party equipment which damages your consoles in some way — whereas before it implied the use of third party equipment itself was reason enough. Sony has also updated its warranty to say it doesn’t apply to damages caused by “someone other than a representative of SIE or an SIE-authorized service provider.”

But wait. There’s more: Of the three major console manufacturers, Microsoft is the only current holdout to keep its warranty language intact. According to the Washington Post, the FTC could pursue legal action against Microsoft if it doesn’t comply, as the company will be in violation of a 1975 law stating a company can’t place restrictions on repair of a device costing more than $5.
