SCHODACK - An Athens man is accused of attacking a Schodack police officer when police tried to seize heroin and hypodermic needles from a passenger during a traffic stop Thursday.

Michael Dauphin, 24, was charged with felony assault along with possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest, Schodack Police said Friday.

Police stopped a car around Columbia Turnpike and Miller Road in Schodack for a traffic violation when officers said they found the passenger, Dauphin, with the contraband. In an attempt to hide the drugs, police said Dauphin attacked the officer.

The officer used his Taser on Dauphin, and even then, Dauphin tried to take the stun gun away, police said.

Both the officer and Dauphin were taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital for minor injuries.

Dauphin was arraigned in Schodack Town Court. Additional charges may be filed, police said.

The driver, whom police didn’t identify, was issued traffic tickets and released.
