LAKE WALES—The North Fort Myers Red Knights ran into some hot bats Friday, in their 6A softball regional final, falling to Lake Wales 13-3 in a game played on Don Ramsay Field.
Following two line-drive singles, to lead off the first inning, catcher Destiny Cuevas hit a three-run homer and the Red Knights were quickly down 3-0.
Red Knights pitcher Emma Johnson would yield three hits and three runs in the second, and the 6-0 deficit was insurmountable.
The Red Knights manufactured a productive fourth inning when Kirsten Gnagey and Haley Weaver singled, Sajarie Jones had an RBI fielder’s choice, generating three runs and narrowing the lead to 8-3.
However, Lake Wales’ Melkayla Irivs led off the fifth inning with an inside-the-park home run down the left-field line.
Savannah Starling, Sommer Baer, Destiny Cuevas and Cameron Dicks all doubled and the game was called at 13-3 in the fifth..
“As a team they hit the ball really well,” North Fort Myers coach Jeff Miner said. “Give them credit; that team was better. Hey, they have a good program, and we have a good program here also.”
With the win, Lake Wales advances to the Final Four. The Red Knights finish 24-6.
