Six tied for lead after first round at Players

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar were among six players who shared the lead at 6-under 66 on Thursday, the largest logjam ever at The Players Championship and the most players tied at the top in the tournament in 40 years.

Tiger Woods had to save bogey on the 18th for a 72. Phil Mickelson posted a 79, his highest score at Sawgrass since 2000. Rickie Fowler, rounding out the threesome, shot 74. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth were a combined 3 over.

More golf: The LPGA Tour has an official team event for the first time in its 69-year history. The Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, a 72-hole event at Midland Country Club in Michigan that will feature foursomes and fourballs, will be held July 17-20 in 2019 and offer a $2 million purse. ... Hockey: Alex Krushelnyski scored 6:48 into the fifth overtime period and Alex Lyon made 94 saves to lead Lehigh Valley to a 2-1 win over Charlotte early Thursday morning in the longest game in the AHL's 82-year history. The game took 146 minutes and 48 seconds of play. That surpassed the Philadelphia Phantoms' 3-2 win over the Albany River Rats that took 142:58 in 2008. ... Captain Connor McDavid scored a hat trick to lead Canada to a 5-0 win over Norway at the world championship, while the Czech Republic beat Russia 4-3 in overtime. NFL: Running back Paul Perkins was released by the Giants. Perkins suffered a pectoral injury before the start of the team's offseason conditioning program and subsequently underwent surgery.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal broke John McEnroe's record of 49 straight sets won on the same surface by beating Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Madrid Open, extending the streak to 50 consecutive sets on clay.
