Fox's bloodbath continues with the cancellation of The Exorcist.

He had a good run, but after two seasons, the chilling tale of Father Tomas (Alfonso Herrera) will come to an end. Despite the positive critical response to the show throughout its first and second seasons, The Exorcist was the lowest-rated drama on the network, making it a very likely candidate for cancellation.

Creator and showrunner Jeremy Slater addressed the news on Twitter, taking a pretty forgiving stance on the matter.

"I know it's easy to get angry at Fox, but the reality is that we were the lowest-rated drama on any network and they still brought us back for a second season, because they loved the show. There are no bad guys in this scenario," Slater wrote. "I was lucky enough to work with the greatest collection of writers, actors, artists and crew that anyone could ask for. Our amazing fans supported us every step of the way. I made lifelong friends and 20 hours of pretty good television. That's not a bad legacy at all... At the end of the day, all I can feel is gratitude for every single member of the #ExorcistCongregation who followed us on this unbelievable adventure. I wish we could have given you a proper ending, but the characters belong to you now. You decide how their story ends."

Based off the original film of the same name, The Exorcist served as a sequel to the film, following Father Tomas Ortega and Father Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) on their mission to exorcise demons and free innocents from their clutches. The first season also starred Geena Davis as Angela Rance, who actually turned out to be Regan MacNeil from the 1973 movie all along.

Along with The Exorcist, Fox has axed Lucifer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Last Man on Earth and The Mick so far.
