STC Chairman sacked due to public outcry

President Maithripala Sirisena, yesterday, removed Anuruddha Polgampola from the post of State Timber Corporation Chairman due to protest, within days of making the appointment.

Polgampola, who was elected to Parliament, on the JVP ticket, in April 2004, switched his allegiance to President Mahinda Rajapaksa after being asked by the JVP for him to resign over smuggling a person to Japan in Aug 2008.

Having worked closely with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Polgampola in the run-up to February 10 local government elections joined forces with President Sirisena.Polgampola was appointed Chairman STC on May 4, following the arrest of P. Dassanayake over a bribery charge.
