DELAND — The MainStreet DeLand Association has selected an artist from Palm Coast to paint a mural of Rufus Pinkney, the late, great, longtime shoeshiner.
Robert Ammon's chosen submission will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday behind the Main Street Center building in Park Lot 4, where Pinkney's shop was located, according to a news release from MainStreet DeLand.
The association is looking raise $8,500 for the project, and any extra funds will go toward maintenance of the city's historic murals, said Wayne Carter, MainStreet's executive director.
Ammon said he was honored to be chosen.
"I will make you proud and will do my utmost to honor Rufus' memory," Ammon said.
The association received eight submissions from artists, including some from out of state, after sending out a call for qualifications.
Ammon, who will be in attendance at Wednesday's event, will paint the mural on the wall where Pinkney's shop was located.
Pinkney, who also was known for his skills with a harmonica, died in September 2016 at age 84.
Donations may be made online via www.MainStreetDeLand.org or addressed to MainStreet DeLand Association, with Rufus Mural in the subject line, and dropped off at 100 N. Woodland Blvd., Suite 4.
