NZIA 'best of the west' awards include architecture icon
There are not many New Zealanders who won't recognise the Tui Brewery, notably the iconic tower that has featured in numerous advertising campaigns.
The Category 1-listed building has been upgraded to 100 per cent of the National Building Standard, and subsequently has won a Heritage Architecture Award in the 2018 Western Architecture Awards, which encompass all of Taranaki and Manawatu.
The awards jury described the project, by Tennent+Brown Architects, as a "skilful piece of work" and noted the successful seismic restoration has minimised the impact on the existing building fabric to maintain the layers of history, which will be celebrated in the future.

The Elliott House, on the outskirts of Feiding, by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, won a Housing Award.
Another recognisable building to receive an award centres on the windmill in Foxton. The Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom project by Bossley Architects received the sole Public Architecture Award.

The jury said the project is the result of a "decade of politicking". "The architects have suspended a waka in a Mitre 10 shed. The impact of this wholly appropriate and apparently simple stroke of genius on the town of Foxton has been immense, creating a community hub around the iconic windmill, Whare Manaaki, and Flax-strippers Museum, bringing Iwi and Nederlands' histories together across a library, and connecting the Main Street town centre back to the river. This project showcases the best of what architecture can contribute to our communities."

An iconic image for many New Zealanders - the Tui Brewery tower in Mangatainoka has undergone a massive restoration by Tennent+Brown Architects, and has received a Heritage Award in the 2018 NZIA Western Architecture Awards.
BOON (formerly Boon Goldsmith Bhasker Brebner Team Architects) received a massive four of the 13 awards. The company won a Commercial Architecture Award for the North Taranaki Sport and Recreation Centre in Waitara, a Small Project Award for Taranaki Base Hospital's Intensive Psychiatric Care (IPC) Unit in New Plymouth, and two Housing Awards for houses in New Plymouth.
Other Housing Award winners were Elliott House, a house on the outskirts of Feilding designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, and Hamblyn House in New Plymouth, designed by Gibbons Architects.
