FOXBORO – It doesn’t look like Tony Garcia will factor into the Patriots competition at left tackle after all.

According to ESPN, the Patriots are releasing Garcia, their 2017 third-round pick, with a non-football injury designation. This comes after the prospect sat out all of last season on the non-football injury/illness list after being disabused with blood clots in his lungs.

Drafted 85th overall in 2017, the 24-year-old seemed like he was on track to return this season. On March 20, he posted a message on his Instagram account, saying, “Just got cleared to play again!!! God is good.”

A standout left tackle at Troy University, Garcia didn’t allow a sack in over 900 snaps. When Nate Solder signed with the New York Giants in March, many wondered if Garcia would factor into the equation at left tackle. Of course, he did face an uphill battle as he reportedly lost 40 pounds last season.

Since the Patriots are releasing him with a non-football injury designation, it’s safe to wonder if Garcia is dealing with more medical issues.

Although Solder’s gone, the Patriots have loaded up on potential replacements. They drafted Isaiah Wynn in the first round, traded for Trent Brown, re-signed LaAdrian Waddle and signed Matt Tobin and Ulrick Johns.
