Morning pics

Morning photographer Darrian Traynor drew the short straw when it came to morning photo shifts this week. It's not a pleasant morning to be out in the wet and cold.

Photographer Karl Gray has a much more picturesque assignment. Check out this lovely sprinking of snow at Mount Hotham.

The rain gauge

It's official - it's rained as much this morning as it did in all of April. We've recorded 16.4 millimetres since midnight, as the running total below shows:

It was raining hardest in the city between 4am and 5am this morning, which surely means there are a lot of bleary-eyed Melburnians around today who were woken up at that time and couldn't quite get back to sleep.

Almost 50 SES callouts

There have been a total of 42 calls for assistance to State Emergency Services overnight.

Spokesman Kelvin Jewell said most of the calls were to do with trees down and building damage.

Craigieburn line delays

There are some minor delays on the Craigieburn Line. Metro is tipping delays of up to 10 minutes, not because of anything rain-related, but because of vandalism of trackside equipment near Oak Park.

More rain advice

Some more rain advice from JimmyTraffic:

This doubles as a hint for today's target word: L Q A H I N E U R

Good morning Melbourne

This sums up the mood with Melbourne at the moment!

Today's weather forecast

There has been 15.6 millimetres of rainfall since midnight - that's almost as much as there was in the entire month of April (16.4 millimetres).

And there is more rain on the way. Expect some more rainfall throughout the morning, easing into the afternoon.

There are also going to be strong winds. Southwesterly gusts of up to 40 km/h are expected in the next few hours, and those gusts could strengthen to up to 60 km/h going into the late morning.

Today's target word

It's time for today's target word.

The letters are: L Q A H I N E U R.

Can you solve it? I'll post a hint at 7.30am.

Yesterday's word was HEARTBEAT, which Rose B figured out in a heartbeat.

Tips for driving in the rain

Here are some tips for driving in the rain:

Monash reopens following fatal crash

The Monash Freeway has reopened outbound following a fatal smash in the early hours of this morning.

A man had pulled his car over into an emergency lane and was hit by a truck about 1.20am. He was rushed to hospital but later died of his injuries.

After the man was struck by the truck, the truck and a white Toyota also collided. The driver of the Toyota sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.

The freeway was closed between Huntingdale Road and Forster Road, but reopened about 6am.
