Man kills self over debt burden

A 42-year-old man, a scrap dealer, ended his life by hanging in his house at R.K. Nagar on Wednesday. Police suspect usury to be the reason as he had borrowed money at high rates of interest.

According to the police, Durai Murugan, 42, was the youngest in the family hailing from Tirunelveli. He was running a scrap shop along with his elder brother and lived in a multi-storied building.

“It is suspected that he had borrowed a huge amount of money from different people and was unable to repay it. Hence he hanged himself. We have found a suicide note and are checking if he had written it,” police sources said.

The police have registered a case of suspicious death.

“Action will be taken against the suspects if usury is confirmed to be the cause behind Durai Murugan’s death,” said a police officer.
