Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsein Loong today said the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to be held in his country is a significant step on the path to peace.
Trump yesterday announced that he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12 in Singapore, the first-ever summit between the top leaders of the two Cold War rivals to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
Lee, responding to the announcement, said the summit is a "significant step on the path to peace".
"May it lead to a successful outcome," local media today quoted Lee as saying.
Singapore's Foreign Ministry said last night that the country was pleased to host the meeting.
"We hope this meeting will advance prospects for peace in the Korean Peninsula," the ministry said in a statement.
