Midvale Village Council

May 10 meeting

KEY ACTION Jerry W. Propp was appointed as a member of council, filling the vacant seat of Bill Zeigler, who recently stepped down.

DISCUSSION Councilwoman Amy Eggerton nominated Lynette Kopp to take the post but no second was heard on her motion. Councilwoman Debbie Creager then nominated Propp. That motion was seconded by Councilwoman LuAnn Kail. Councilwoman Veronica Day, who arrived late due to getting stuck in traffic, was not available to vote on the measure and Council President Donna Kohler was at the meeting, but left before it started due to illness. Propp was not at the meeting and could not be sworn in.

OTHER ACTION

* Passed a resolution to allow the placement of a 5-mil street bond issue to be placed on the November ballot. This would renew the existing street issue and would not be an increase to resident’s taxes. The issue would bring in between $40-50,000 annually and is seen as a necessity for the repair of streets, roads and bridges.

* Council agreed to allow the “Mine”-ding Midvale’s History Group to hold a history day on Sept. 8, at the park pavilion. In conjunction with this, a car show will be held, Queen’s Tea luncheon and the Midvale United Methodist Church will run a concession stand, contingent on there not being any games or tournaments being held that day. Candace Wilson, who addressed council about the activity, said the intent is to bring the festival back for 2019.

* Council approved the purchase of a 12 by 20 foot building to be used as storage for the Fire Department. The cost of $3,850 would be partially reimbursed to the village by the department. Fireman Jason Kukwa acknowledged that the department will be providing weekend service to the Midvale Speedway and will be receiving payments for that, which will greatly help the department’s funding.

* Council agreed to pay a total of $108 for an app which enables members of the Fire Department to use their phones as a pager. Kukwa noted that in 2019, they will be receiving new, up-to-date equipment through the county. Due to a “massive influx” of members to the fire department, there was a shortage of equipment, Kukwa explained.

* Approved the purchases of new tires for the village truck and a new push mower for use at the park.

* Council approved a recommendation from the finance committee to sign up for Ohio Check Book, which would allow residents to view the Village’s finances on-line.

* Approved $900 for repairs to the park restroom.

FOR YOUR INFO

* Fireman Jason Kukwa said that the Fire Department would take care of watering flowers and plants at the Midvale Miners Memorial that is located in the park. Brenda Stafford told council that she is no longer able to do this due to health issues. It was noted that water had to be carried as there is no available source of water in the park.

* Police Chief Brian Anderson said he is submitting applications for grant funding in an effort to obtain a new vehicle for the Police Department.

* Clean up week will begin June 4. A large dumpster will be placed behind the fire station.

UP NEXT Will meet at 6:30 p.m. June 14 in the park pavilion.
