The town’s streetlights will undergo a complete overhaul with the old halogen lights being replaced by LED bulbs. Subarnapur district Collector Dasarathi Satapathy recently launched the programme from the Maa Sureswari Temple here by switching on the LEDs that have been installed in the temple premises.

Satapathy said 2,082 LED bulbs would be installed in the town's 15 wards. “Sonepur would shortly have LEDs in all wards. The work is expected to be completed by the end of May. All existing high-mast, mini-mast and street lights will be replaced by LEDs, he added.

A source said the municipality had entered into an agreement with the Noida-based Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL) for the project under the Street Light National Programme.

The company will also take care of the maintenance for seven years. EESL is a joint venture of NTPC, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation Limited and Power Grid Corporation of India under the Union Ministry of Power.

Using LED bulbs in place of conventional lights would significantly reduce power consumption.
