Strong steel prices boost ArcelorMittal profit

ArcelorMittal MT.AE said Friday that first-quarter net profit increased on year, due in part to continued strength in steel prices. The steelmaker's net profit was $1.19 billion compared with $1.00 billion a year earlier, while sales rose more than 16% to $19.19 billion. Analysts had predicted profit of $940 million on sales of $18.69 billion, according to a consensus compiled by FactSet.

EU approves ArcelorMittal's acquisition of Ilva

The European Commission on Monday approved ArcelorMittal's MT.AE acquisition of Italian steel plant Ilva, subject to conditions. The commission said the decision is "conditional on the divestiture of an extensive remedy package to preserve effective competition on European steel markets to the benefit of consumers and businesses.

ArcelorMittal proposes divestments for EU Ilva nod

ArcelorMittal MT.FR said Friday that it has proposed a package of divestments to the European Commission in an effort to gain approval for its intended takeover of Italian steelmaker Ilva. The package includes ArcelorMittal Piombino, the company's only galvanized steel plant in Italy, as well as assets in Romania, Macedonia, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg.

ArcelorMittal to vote on switching to dollar

ArcelorMittal MT.AE said Thursday that it will propose to shareholders that it changes the currency of its share capital to U.S. dollars from euros. The steelmaker said the change would simplify the company's reporting process, given that it prepares its consolidated financial information in dollars and its parent uses it as its functional currency.

ArcelorMittal, Nippon Steel bid for Essar Steel

ArcelorMittal (MT.AE) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. (5401.TO) jointly submitted on Monday an offer for India's Essar Steel in a re-bidding process for the insolvent steelmaker, the companies said.
