Mumbai’s heritage building at CSMT to run on green energy

After introducing green energy at the Asangaon station and the stations along the Neral- Matheran route, the Central Railway (CR) has now planned to run the UNESCO world heritage building of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on green energy.

The heritage building, which houses the CR headquarters, will now be operated on green energy. For this purpose, CR will buy green energy equivalent to its requirement and add it to the state grid. It is, thus, set to purchase six-megawatt energy from a wind energy unit in Sangli, Western Maharashtra.

CR officials have estimated that 12.93 million units of energy are expected to be utilized at the CSMT heritage building and other offices in the building. These buildings receive their supply of electricity from Tata Power and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). The remaining quantity will be used at Manmad, Bhusawal and Nagpur stations.

In addition, CR has planned to procure more green energy in order to use it at other stations, including Mankhurd, Matunga and Chembur. “We are attempting to turn many stations green by the end of this year,” said SK Jain, divisional railway manager, Central Railway.

On March 31, in a bid to go green, CR had equipped all its railway stations with LED (light emitting diode) lighting. Last year, solar panels had been installed at CSMT to meet the power requirement of the administrative wing. Similarly, other railway offices in the zone are being equipped with solar panels.
