Inflow into major dams in Theni district increases

Intermittent showers have brought down the temperature considerably in Dindigul and Theni districts. As a result of the rain, inflow into major dams in Theni district has increased moderately.

Rain rocked Kodaikanal, Dindigul and nearby areas on Wednesday night too. The district received an average rainfall of 19.7 mm, with Kodaikanal recording the highest rainfall of 106 mm and Nilakottai the lowest rainfall of 1.2 mm.

Various places in Theni district experienced moderate to heavy rainfall. Periyar dam site and its catchments received moderate showers.

Following heavy rain in Kodaikanal, Sothuparai dam has been overflowing for the past three days. The inflow into the dam was 178 cusecs on Thursday.

Good flow in Periyar river cheered pilgrims visiting Sri Gowmariamman Temple at Veerapandi for Chithirai festival. Sufficient police force was deployed near the riverbank to ensure safety of the pilgrims. Surveillance cameras were fitted along the riverbank to monitor crowd.

Rainfall recorded at various places during the 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Thursday was (in mm): Thekkadi 45.4, Kodaikanal Boat Club 42.5, Gudalur 27.6, Veerapandi 19, Periyar dam 18.8, Dindigul 16.3, Oddanchatram 16, Uthamapalayam 15.9, Palani 9, Natham 2.5, Vedasandur and Vedasandur Tobacco Research Station 2.2 each.
