BROOKFIELD — The New Milford baseball team stranded many more runners than they plated in its game Wednesday against Brookfield.
Seeing as both of those numbers were in the double digits, it was quite the day at the dish for the Green Wave.
Highlighted by a five-hit performance from Chris Gesualdi, New Milford scored runs in each of the first five innings en route to a 10-3 win over the Bobcats. Austin Swanson and Zach Prahach each homered for New Milford (12-5).
“I was just staying back and trying to hit fastballs,” Gesualdi said. “See good pitches and hit them; we were really aggressive, getting out early in counts and getting hits.”
The Green Wave had 16 hits and drew nine walks. Swanson went 3-for-4 — a triple shy of the cycle — and walked. New Milford left the bases loaded on three occasions.
A far cry from being no-hit at Ridgefield last Tuesday.
“Ever since Ridgefield we’ve preached a more aggressive approach at the plate,” New Milford coach Ryan Johnson. “We’re a better offensive team than we proved against Ridgefield; today we put it all together.”
Brookfield got on the board in the third on an RBI single by Billy Oldham; the Bobcats added two in the seventh on singles from Oldham and Harrison Ashley. The Bobcats dropped to 6-11 with the loss.
Green Wave ace Tim Cianciolo scattered seven hits in five innings, only allowing one run. The Bobcats had 11 hits in the game but also left a host of runners on base.
CLOSING IN
The win puts the Green Wave in a position to qualify for SWC playoffs, a place they hope to do damage in once they arrive. New Milford went 16-4 each of the last two seasons, reaching the final in 2016 and being upset in the quarterfinals last season.
“It’s been frustrating,” Gesualdi said. “A few of the guys have been on the team the past three years and we want it bad. … We play great defense and have big bats.”

“We’re trying to get hot at the right time and make a run,” Johnson said. “(Swanson, Derek Profita and Gesualdi) are all seniors have been with me since my first year when we made it to the Class LL semifinals. They have the experience of being there and want to get back.”
