Ujjain: Leader of opposition Rajendra Vashishtha led delegation of Congress corporators met the municipal commissioner on Wednesday, and handed over a memorandum, mentioning serious complaints regarding supply of contaminated water continuously across the city and its after effects on health of residents.
Vashishtha said, residents were suffering from many water generated diseases due to use of contaminated drinking water. According to Vashishtha, despite spending of huge amounts by the civic government from funds received for purification of the Kshipra river, no major change was seen in the condition of river which continued to be contaminated by the water of river Kanh.
He said, water mixed with chemicals from industries in Indore and Dewas was getting mixed with the waters of the Kshipra water and the same untreated water was being supplied to the city dwellers as drinking water. The delegation demanded commissioner Vijaykumar J to take immediate steps to stop contamination. Vashishtha said “purified potable water is the right of every resident, so that water generated diseases like diarrhoea and cholera can be kept at bay.”
He also slammed the civic body for not supplying potable water in many residential colonies of the city. The members of the delegation raised questions about failure to supply water from the Narmada when crores of rupees have been spent over Narmada Kshipra link project.
Vashishtha underscored alternative arrangements for supplying drinking water to city dwellers like hand pumps, tube wells and water tankers. He expressed his woes over the slow speed of development in many wards of the city, and suggested that funds should be allotted by departments concerned, so that the development work may not be affected.
