BEAVER — Two of the three Beaver County Commissioners are OK with Widmer Engineering getting a four-year contract to inspect and perform other services on short county-owned bridges.

Commissioners Daniel Camp and Tony Amadio voted Thursday to award the contract to the Beaver Falls-based firm without discussion. But Commissioner Sandie Egley voted against the move because the county should have considered other firms, she said.

The contract call for Widmer to be paid an annual fee “not to exceed $50,000” per year to do the work on county-owned bridges that are 20 feet or shorter.

Widmer has done the work for more than 20 years and another firm should have been given the contract to allow for “creative solutions,” Egley said.

“I think it’s a shame we keep rubber stamping these contracts year after year,” Egley said.

That’s not the case, Camp said, explaining that Widmer was the choice of the county’s Public Works and Liquid Fuels departments that work on bridge inspections.

“As a commissioner, I take what my directors say and I’m OK with it,” Camp said.
