Tagore in reality had repudiated Knighthood in protest against the Jalianwalla Bagh massacre. In the past there was huge uproar over theft of Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel Prize medal.

Deb recently kick started a controversy when he said internet existed in the days of epic Mahabharata.

"India is using internet since several lakhs years. In Mahabharata Sanjay, who was blind was narrating to Dhitrastra as to what is happening in battle field due to internet and technology."

Deb later said that said all international fashion and design contest organized in Paris are run by “international marketing mafia”. He said international businessmen took advantage of the fact that Indians are winning beauty pageants in a row.

Deb also stated that Mechanical engineers should not opt for civil services but civil engineers should. Deb even asked the educated youth in his state to "set up paan shops instead of running after political parties for several years to get government jobs and waste vital time of their life".
