Failing SSLC isn't a shame anymore in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The SSLC board in Karnataka has decided to remove the word `repeater' from the marks card of students who failed and are appearing for supplementary examinations. Although the board started the initiative since last year, the percentage of students who appeared for supplementary examinations was less, says V Sumangala, director.

"We have not popularized the initiative enough last year which is why the percentage of students who appeared for supplementary examinations were less. We want them all to pass and continue with higher education and not drop out from schools altogether. This year, we have reissued the circular again. Their marks card will not have it mentioned that they are `repeaters'. Then they can continue to apply in colleges without having to feel ashamed," she said.

Out of 70,232 repeaters who appeared for SSLC in 2018, 20,489 have passed, which is only 29.17%. The last date for applying for supplementary examinations is May 19, the board officials said.
