I received a call at 2 a.m. Wednesday from a Danbury police officer to alert my wife that there was a window open at the school where she is the secretary. Since she is on the contact list, she had to go and meet the officer to open the school.

I drove my wife to the school because my truck had her car blocked and met the officer — there were three patrol cars to greet us. My wife got out of the car to speak with the officer and then my wife and I proceeded to open the school. The officers all remained at their vehicles on the other end of the parking lot.

When I asked my wife if an officer was coming in with us, she informed me that he told her that he didn’t think anyone would be in the building since the alarm hadn’t been tripped. My wife and I entered the building and closed the window.

Since when wouldn’t an officer “lead the way” into a building, at 2 in the morning, to assure the safety of the public ? Obviously, there wasn’t anyone lurking in the building.

I’m not sure if this is protocol with the department, but it would have been nice to have an escort.
