An Iowa City woman is accused of assaulting a pregnant nurse at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics last week.
Mara J. Steele, 35, faces charges of assault on a person of certain occupations and assault with intent of injury on a person of certain occupations.
She is accused of hitting a nurse in the stomach May 2 at 5:30 a.m. in the UIHC Emergency Department, court records state. Steele then pushed a wheeled cart into the nurse also striking her in the abdomen, police reported. The nurse, who was 32 weeks pregnant, was hospitalized after the alleged assault, court records show.
Steele also is accused of spitting in the nurse’s face, mouth and eyes.
The assault with intent charge is a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
