One Wichita Falls teacher told the Times Record News Thursday about the viral fame he's experiencing after posting about one student's ingenious response to an assignment.
"My students had to pick a Marvel character to embody within a resume and cover letter," wrote Jeff Davis, a Wichita Falls ISD teacher at the Career Education Center.
"The idea that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take lives within one particular student of mine."
One particular student chose Groot, a superhero in "Guardians of the Galaxy" with a – let's call it a very limited vocabulary.
In the resume and cover letter, the student answered with Groot's signature phrase, "I am Groot."
Twitter immediately began to praise the student's creativity and became curious of what mark the student received.
Given the student's ingenuity, Davis said the student received a 95 and a 100 on the separate assignments.
"Grammar is key," he said in a Facebook post identifying his Twitter handle as @ROBODAVISWFISD.
"I think that it going viral is something that is pretty cool," Davis told the Times Record News Thursday. "Some friends of mine that live in other states have told me how they heard about it on the news and how it seems kind of surreal to know someone that was a part of something so popular."
Davis said he never expected the post to go viral.
"I just thought it was something funny that my friends and family might enjoy," he said in an email interview.
Due to an absence and standardized testing since the post, Davis hasn't been able to speak to the student whose assignment has been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people online.
"I did email him though so hopefully he knows by the end of the day," Davis said.
Based on coverage by numerous national outlets, we're pretty he'll see the post.
Within 24 hours of the initial post on Facebook, the photos of the student's assignemnt had received 17,000 shares, 11,000 likes and 7,200 comments.
"It was also mentioned on the radio in Fargo, North Dakota 'wait until you hear about this high school student in Wichita Falls'," Davis wrote on Twitter.
As of 10 a.m. Thursday, the post had over 133,000 shares, 114,000 reactions and 46,000 comments.
By noon Thursday, it had been shared over 144,000 times with 123,000 reactions and 52,000 comments.
Davis – who teaches concepts of engineering, robotics and automation, and engineering design and problem-solving – has reached out on Twitter to several celebrities about the viral post.
"Many of the teachers here at the WFISD Career Education Center think it is cool and some even make a joke saying, 'I knew him back when,'" Davis said, "but it is all in good fun."
Davis noted the irony of the viral post happening during Teacher Appreciation Week, but he was quick to remain humble and focused on his students.
"For me, I feel it is important to remember there are still two-and-a-half weeks left, so we are still moving forward with education in the classrooms here at the CEC," he said.
Davis also mentioned another student who was creative with the resume – completed as Daredevil, "a blind lawyer by day, crime fighter by night" – that made him laugh.
"The resume was turned in written in normal Times New Roman print, but there was another attachment that the student changed to represent the braille dots," Davis said.
Here at the Times Record News, we applaud the students and their teacher for their creativity and celebrating humorous responses.
Heck, maybe the student will even get to give Groot the pre-written resume and cover letter to submit to the next audition.
