Some Calgary landscaping companies and garden centres say the late season snow this year has affected spring work schedules, revenue and staffing.
As a Peter Hughes Landscape crew works on a southeast backyard, the company owner says he hasn't seen an April like the one we just had in years.
"Well, we really haven't had a spring. We've had a season of winter, and we're almost right into summer," Hughes tells CBC News.
And that's on top of an already short season.
"We have a short season in the city of Calgary, anywhere from 7½ to eight months, and now we're down to less than seven months, because it's not going to be summer in November."
The company provides landscape, maintenance and construction service to hundreds of Calgary homes.
Hughes says the weather has delayed spring cleanup work like power raking, and that frozen ground has delayed the tree and sod harvest that feeds landscape work.
"Ourselves, like many other companies, nurseries, growers, have missed out on a huge part of their season."
Lisa Silva with the Blue Grass Nursery, Sod & Garden Centre says they've seen similar weather related delays, but adds they'll be fully stocked by the May long weekend.
"What we find is that we're just going to have a really, really busy compacted season this year," Silva said.
Hughes, meanwhile, says his crews will eventually get caught up.
"In a week to 10 days, we'll be full bore, and we'll be back to our regular selves and hope to forget what happened."
Hughes says he and his crew will pick up the pace to try to make up for this year's slow start.
