13 crew rescued after fishing boat capsizes

Mumbai: Thirteen members of a fishing crew were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard after their boat capsized off the Palghar coast, early on Wednesday. A Coast Guard spokesperson said the rescue was effected by fishermen in the vicinity.

Palghar Police spokesperson Hemant Kumar said the fishing vessel Shivneri was located 34 nautical miles from Palghar district’s Satpati town in the Arabian Sea, when it developed engine trouble around 2 a.m. Coast Guard and local fishermen reached the spot after receiving an SOS from the ill-fated boat.

District officials said the held on to plastic drums and used the wireless communication system on board their vessel to send out the SOS. “An engine snag suspected to have caused it to capsize,” Palghar District Collector Prashant Narnaware said.
