Indore: DAVV’s best researcher Prof Dinesh Varshney passes away


Indore: A faculty at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), Prof Dinesh Varshney, who was hospitalised after he fell off from the boundary wall of his house, passed away on Wednesday night. He was 53. Varshney had fallen from boundary wall of his house when he was chopping off branches of a tree on May 2.  He had sustained serious head injuries and was admitted to Apple Hospital where he breathed his last on Wednesday night.

“He was on ventilator from the day he was brought to the hospital. We were told by the doctors that his condition is very serious and only miracle could save him,” said Dr Sandeep Devdhar, brother-in-law of the deceased.

Devdhar said that the doctors declared Varsheny dead at 11 pm on Wednesday. “After that, family was informed and ventilator was removed,” he said. As Varshney’s death was not natural, the doctors said his body would be handed over to the family members after performing post-mortem.


A faculty with School of Physics, Varshney was a brilliant research. He had more than 510 research publications to his credit. His papers were published in reputed international journals and he was regarded as the best researcher in the university. In his teaching endeavour of more than 27 years, he supervised 33 PhD candidates and 25 MPhil candidates.

He was recipient of many awards and titles including Certificate from International Centre for Diffraction Data (USA ), State level Dr Kailash Nath Katju Award for Sciences, 55th DAE?Solid State Physics Symposium Poster Award, Best Research Scientist award from Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology Bhopal, National Indian Science Congress Award (ISCA) Young Scientist award, to name a few.

School of Physics head and former vice chancellor Dr Ashutosh Mishra said that he was role model to many students and aspiring scientists. Mishra said that he was not only a great academic but also a good administrator. He discharged many administrative responsibilities also at DAVV. He was director of college development council, head of School of Law, chairman of Board of Studies. Currently, he was incharge of review works at evaluation centre.
