French President Emmanuel Macron has been communicating with regional players, including his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, to ensure Lebanon’s stability, an Elysee source told local daily Annahar in a report published Thursday.
The French presidential source voiced Macron’s worries about Lebanon vis-a-vis the United States’ withdrawal from the Iran deal earlier this week.
The report added that European states were adamant that Lebanon not be turned into a battleground for regional wars.
The international community came together in recent months to ensure that Lebanon remained stable following the abrupt resignation announcement of Prime Minister Saad Hariri last November. He later withdrew the resignation, but fears were raised over a potential outbreak of violence between Iran and Saudi Arabia on Lebanese soil. Since then, two international conferences were held to support Lebanon – one for the economy and another for state security agencies.
