IoT for better sanitation

Sensors to be placed in manholes to detect the level of sewage in them

The internet of things (IoT) would soon play a key role in improving sanitation, as the government would use the network to keep a check on overflowing and open manholes.

The IoT is a network that comprises devices, each with an on-and-off switch, connected to one another by means of Internet.

Speaking on the sidelines of T-Chits, Rama Devi Lanka, IT, Electronics and Communications Department Officer on Special Duty (Emerging Technologies), said sensors would be placed in manholes which would detect the level of sewage in them. They would enable officials to take appropriate action if the levels exceed. The sensors would also provide information on whether a manhole is left open.

“We published an EOI (expression of interest) on Wednesday. We are trying to evaluate solutions after which an RFP (request for proposal) will be issued,” she said, adding that it was likely that project would be rolled out in June or July.

Ms. Lanka said the government was working on using blockchain solutions on a pilot basis to verify fake certificates. “How does a department verify whether certificates are fake or original? One use case that we are looking at is, why don’t we pull these certificates on a blockchain, whether it is SSC or Intermediate and so on. When somebody applies for admission, the college can verify the certificates. This is one use case we have just initiated,” she said.
