New Philadelphia Municipal Court records show the highway patrol and police department filed charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, failure to control, leaving the scene of an accident, fleeing and eluding, disobeying a police order, and not wearing a seat belt.
NEW PHILADELPHIA A 28-year-old man from the 400 block of Fair Avenue NW was charged with multiple traffic offenses after leading police on a high-speed chase Wednesday evening.
An officer reported the suspect's vehicle reached speeds up to 85 mph.
The incident began with a citizen's 6 p.m. report that a reckless driver, who had fallen asleep at a traffic signal in the village of Tuscarawas, was traveling on state Route 416 heading into New Philadelphia.
After the caller lost track of the vehicle, a police officer saw it speed through the parking lot of BellStores, 110 Commercial Ave. SE, at 6:21 p.m. He said the vehicle was not stopping.
The vehicle went south on S. Broadway, passing Providence Drive, and reached speeds up to an estimated 85 mph as it went toward the city limits.
A police supervisor called off the chase because of traffic and road conditions. The Ohio Highway Patrol was notified.

A 911 dispatcher told New Philadelphia police that the same driver and vehicle were believed to have hit a retaining wall on David Road SE, off state Route 416.
