ATLANTA — Carrie Eberle pitched a four-hit shutout and hit an RBI double to lead 10th-seeded Virginia Tech to a 4-0 win over seventh-seeded Duke in the opening round of the ACC softball tournament Wednesday.

The Hokies (23-29) will face second-seeded Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the single-elimination tournament. Pitt went 2-0 against Tech in the regular season.

Eberle struck out six and walked one.

The Hokies grabbed a 2-0 lead over Duke (29-27) in the second inning. Olivia Lattin belted a solo homer and Taylor Clark had an RBI double.

Sierra Walton hit an RBI single in the fifth, while Eberle hit an RBI double in the seventh.

SOFTBALL

Radford 3, Winthrop 2

RADFORD — Talia Douglas hit a walk-off, RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give the third-seeded Highlanders a win over the sixth-seeded Eagles on the first day of the Big South tournament.

The tourney host Highlanders (34-17) will face second-seeded Longwood at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the double-elimination tournament.

Winthrop (17-31) led Radford 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. But Radford’s Hunter Mundy doubled, advanced to third on a bunt and scored on Marissa Yow’s RBI single. Lauren Maddry and Marissa Gagliano hit infield singles to load the bases and set the stage for Douglas’ game-winning hit.

Douglas also had an RBI single in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.

WOMEN’S GOLF

UVa advances

MADISON, Wis. — Eighth-seeded Virginia finished second in the NCAA tournament’s Madison Regional, earning a berth in the national championships.

UVa shot a 1-over 289 in the final round for a three-day total of 5-under 859. Duke won the 18-team regional with a 14-under 851. Old Dominion finished 14th.

The top six teams and the top three individuals not on those six squads advanced to the national championships, which will be held May 18-23 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Southern Cal, Ohio State, Northwestern and Arizona State are the other teams moving on from the Madison Regional.

UVa golfers Beth Lillie and Katharine Patrick tied for seventh with a 3-under 213.

Virginia Tech finishes 10th

AUSTIN, Texas — Virginia Tech saw its NCAA tournament debut come to a close with a 10th-place finish at the Austin Regional.

The top six teams and the top three individuals not on those six squads advanced to the national championships.

The Hokies, seeded 14th in the 18-team regional, were in a two-way tie for fourth after Monday’s first round and were in a four-way tie for fourth after Tuesday’s second round. But they shot a 19-over 307 on Wednesday to finish with a 24-over 888. They wound up 18 shots out of sixth place.

Arkansas won the regional with a 26-under 838. Texas, Auburn, Florida, Baylor and Oklahoma are the other teams moving on from the Austin Regional.

Tech’s Elizabeth Bose tied for 24th with a 3-over 219. Tech’s Amanda Hollandsworth (Floyd County) was tied for fifth entering the final round, but she shot an 8-over 80 on Wednesday and finished in a tie for 34th with a 5-over 221.

W&L stays in 15th at division tourney

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — The Generals shot a 46-over 339 in the second round of the NCAA III championship to remain in 15th place with a two-round score of 46-over 677. W&L was led by Mary Frances Hall who carded a 8-over 81 for a two-round total of 21-over 167 and finished the day tied for 50th out of 130 players.

Claremont Mudd Scripps leads the team competition with a 44-over 628, and its own Margaret Loncki is tied with Navika Kuchakulla of NYU tied atop the individual leader board each with a two day total of 6-over 152.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Area players honored

W&L’s Jess Castelo (41 goals, 21 assists) has been named the ODAC offensive player of the year, while Roanoke College’s Emma Boris (44 caused turnovers, 61 ground balls) was chosen the defensive player of the year.

This is the first time the league has split up the player of the year honor into offensive and defensive awards.

W&L’s Brooke O’Brien, who steered the 10th-ranked Generals to their ninth straight ODAC title, was chosen the coach of the year for the sixth time.

Castelo and Boris were joined on the All-ODAC first team by W&L’s Cordelia Peters (43 goals), Dani Murray (39 goals) and Riley Garcia; and Roanoke’s Maggie Lewis (35 goals).

The second team included Roanoke’s Ellie Armstrong (47 goals) and W&L’s Caitlin Anderson.

The third team included W&L’s Collette Murray (24 goals), Rebecca Wellford, Abigail Hancock and Hannah Wiltshire (78 saves); and Roanoke’s Mckenna Polak (35 goals), Katie Clements (31 goals) and Caitlin Blankenship.

Fleenor gets bid

Michelle Fleenor (15-4) of W&L received a bid to the 32-woman NCAA Division III singles championships, which will be held May 24-26 in California.

BASEBALL

West Virginia 10, Virginia Tech 5

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountaineers (25-21) rode a 7-0 lead after three innings to a nonconference win over the Hokies (20-27).

West Virginia pounded nine Tech pitchers for 17 hits.

Nick Menken had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run, and Michael Fernandez went 3 for 5 with a run scored for the Hokies.
