PUNE: Four people from Mumbai were killed while four others suffered serious injuries when their car hit the railings of the
Pune-Mumbai expressway near the Kamshet tunnel at 3pm on Wednesday
The driver lost control over the wheel after the car’s front tyre burst and the vehicle hit the cement railings. Two occupants of the car died on the spot. The deceased and the six injured people were taken to a private hospital at
Somatne Phata on the old Pune-Mumbai highway. Two of the injured died while taking treatment.
The deceased and the injured were residents of
Kurla and Sewri in Mumbai. They were coming to Pune for the marriage of one of their close friends. The ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday evening.
The police identified the deceased as Nikhil Prakash Rao, Siddesh Anil Bede, Nitin Rushipal Jinwal and Rupesh Jadhav and the injured as Akshay Chavan, Vaibhavi Sudrik, Jayashree Rathod and Neeta Chevilkar. All were aged between 20 and 27.
The police suspect that the summer heat and other factors played a role in the accident.
Local police station officials, the highway safety patrol (HSP), Pune, and expressway authorities rushed to the spot after the accident.
The car was severely damaged. Its wreckage was removed from the expressway lane to prevent a traffic pile-up.
