United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Wednesday expressed support for the elections held in Lebanon over the weekend, urging political leaders to work in "unity" to form a new government.
In a statement published to the U.N. website Wednesday, Gutteres said he “looks forward to the formation of the new government” – a process set to start once the current Parliament officially dissolves on May 20.
The U.N. chief urged “Lebanon’s political leaders to work in a spirit of unity,” in a message that came amid violent skirmishes that broke out in Beirut and elsewhere in Lebanon Monday and Tuesday following the emergence of the electoral results. In a clash in the Aley town of Choueifat, a Progressive Socialist Party supporter died after being shot.
Guterres’ statement came two days after other international actors began reacting to the results of Sunday's general elections – the first to be held in Lebanon in nine years.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Duarric said Monday that the international body hopes “that all Lebanese political stakeholders will continue to act responsibly in the days following polling,” and urged a “swift” formation of the new government.
