California's new homes to have solar by 2020; SunRun shares jump

Shares of SunRun Inc. jumped nearly 6% Wednesday on news that California regulators earlier Wednesday approved new building standards that will require new homes in the state to have solar panels starting in 2020, the first state to do so. California is the No. 1 solar market in the U.S., with more than 5 million homes powered by solar and more than 15% of its electricity generated by solar, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, an industry group. "Other states may not be ready for this step yet, but this is a precedent-setting policy - one that will bring enormous benefits and cost savings to consumers," SEIA Chief Executive Abigail Ross Hopper said in a statement. Shares of Vivint Solar Inc. another residential solar-power installer, remained lower for the day and were recently down 0.6%, paring earlier losses.
