Joplin Man Wanted For Kidnapping Is Arrested After Standoff

Updated:

KOAM and FOX 14 receive court documents after a standoff in Joplin leads to the arrest of a man wanted for kidnapping.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office requested the Joplin SWAT team to help them serve a warrant for the arrest of 36-year-old Brandon Funkhouser. Shortly after 12:00 p.m. on May 8th, 2018, a two hour standoff began at the Missouri Place Apartments on East 32nd Street in Joplin.

Authorities say they used tear gas to help apprehend Funkhouser. He was taken into custody and no injuries were reported. No one else was inside the residence.

Police were serving an arrest warrant for first degree kidnapping. A woman reported that in late April, 2018, Funkhouser would not let her leave the residence and that Funkhouser told her that if she tried to leave he would kill her. The 36-year-old also had a felony warrant for failure to appear on an unlawful use of a weapon charge from a July 2017 incident. According to court documents, Funkhouser pointed a gun at a woman, yelled at her, asking where her sister was. Read more on this incident in the Criminal Report and Probable Cause.

Funkhouser is being held at the Newton County Jail.
