The Newton County Sheriff's Office requested the Joplin SWAT team to help them serve a warrant for the arrest of 36-year-old Brandon Funkhouser. Shortly after 12:00 p.m. on May 8th, 2018, a two hour standoff began at the Missouri Place Apartments on East 32nd Street in Joplin.

Police were serving an arrest warrant for first degree kidnapping. A woman reported that in late April, 2018, Funkhouser would not let her leave the residence and that Funkhouser told her that if she tried to leave he would kill her.
