DeKALB – A total of 53 tickets, 19 of which were for using an electronic device while driving, were issued by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office over a two-week period aimed to crack down on distracted driving.
Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a nationwide initiative to eliminate preventable accidents and fatalities caused by distracted motorists, was recognized by the Sheriff's office from April 16-30.
"Driver distraction is a persistent issue in DeKalb County and often has life-altering consequences," Lt. Jim Burgh said in a news release. "We implemented this enforcement action to encourage motorists to drop it and drive."
In addition to the 19 electronic device citations, officers also issued 11 seat belt citations, six uninsured motorists citations, four speeding citations, one child car seat citation, one suspended or revoked license and one drug arrest.
"Distracted Driving Awareness Month may be over but the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office will continue working to stop residents from engaging in this deadly behavior," Burgh said.
