Cop bikes to be upgraded for better patrolling

‘For better transparency, the policemen on these bikes will wear body cameras’

The Delhi Police are all set to upgrade 1,100 existing motorcycles — three from each police station and 10 from each circle of the existing 53 traffic circles — to curb street crime and facilitate traffic on congested stretches.

Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dependra Pathak said a tender for the facelift process has been approved.

‘GPS-enabled’

He said 530 upgraded motorcycles of the traffic police and 570 enhanced motorcycles of the district police will hit the road in next two months.

All bikes will be GPS-enabled and geofenced, if a bike goes out of its predetermined patrolling area it will be monitored by the control room, he said.

“The motorcycles will boast LED lights for better visibility. The riders will have a hands-free megaphone [loudhailer] to instruct wrongly parked vehicles or violators. They will also have a stun gun and pepper spray to control drunk drivers or other troublemakers on the road,” he said.

For better transparency, Mr. Pathak said, policemen on these motorcycles will wear body cameras.

In case of traffic police, the pillion rider will have a flasher to guide vehicles at night. In case of the district police motorcycle squad, the pillion rider will have sophisticated weapons like AK-47 rifles or MP5 guns that are light and easy to carry.

Traffic policemen on motorcycles will be equipped with a breathalyser device and a machine to issue challan to traffic violators.

The upgraded motorcycles will also help in clearing traffic jam on congested roads.

“These motorcycles will help the police navigate the narrow lanes of congested localities in the Capital, where speedy access is a problem. They will be the first responders in case of any incidents or traffic issues,” Mr. Pathak added.
