NEW SEWICKLEY TWP. — In the days before the high school prom, junior and senior students in the Freedom Area School District participated in a mock crash to raise awareness about the dangers of drunken driving.
The crash was arranged through the high school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club and the New Sewickley Township Police Department.
A group of seven students acted in the simulation Wednesday.
“It seems like it’s just a really good idea,” sophomore Shyann Komara said. She is a member of the club and acted in the mock crash. “It’s going to bring awareness to the people going to prom. It’s going to genuinely help people realize you need to be safe and be not stupid and drink and drive.”
In addition to police, firefighters, emergency medical responders, the Beaver County 911 Center and ambulance services participated in the crash.
“There was a lot of planning,” said sophomore Morgan Swab, who also acted as a victim of the crash. “We had to make scripts and prepare the cars. We spent this last hour getting ready, preparing for this.”
The mock crash lasted for about an hour.
